Strategies
Every serious way to find an edge before kickoff.
Four ways to read the pre-match board before the market corrects — with the math already done.
EV+ betting: backing mispriced lines
Expected value (EV) is the average return a bet would yield if you placed it many times over. A price is *EV+* when it implies a lower probability than the outcome's true (fair) probability — the book is paying you more than the risk is worth. Consistently backing EV+ prices over a large sample is what separates disciplined bettors from punters.
EV is a long-run expectation, not a per-bet promise — variance means individual bets still lose. No outcome is guaranteed.

Dropping odds & steam: reading sharp money
'Steam' is a rapid, broad shortening of a price as money pours in — often driven by sharp bettors or breaking team news. A dropping line is the market revising an outcome's probability upward in real time. Spotting it early lets you take value before it's fully priced in.
A dropping price can keep dropping or reverse — momentum is a signal, not a certainty.

Arbitrage betting: locking a return across books
An arbitrage ('arb') exists when bookmakers price the same event far enough apart that backing every outcome — at the right stakes, across books — locks in a return regardless of result. Arbs are small, short-lived, and vanish as prices re-align.
Subject to bookmaker limits, stake restrictions, and price availability; a window can close before both legs are placed. Returns are not guaranteed.

Odds comparison: always taking the best price
The same bet is rarely priced identically everywhere. Odds comparison means scanning every bookmaker's price for an outcome and taking the highest — the simplest, most reliable way to protect your edge, since a worse price quietly erodes long-run returns.
Best-price availability changes constantly and varies per bookmaker and region.

Middles: paired lines with a gap between them
A middle exists when two bookmakers hang different numbers on the same spread or total, leaving a range of results in which both sides of the position settle as winners. The range is usually narrow and margin is paid on both legs, so the case for a middle rests on how wide the gap is rather than on the fact that one exists.
A result outside the middle zone settles one leg as a loss; with margin paid on both, that position usually returns less than it cost. Middles are narrow and infrequent.

Questions, answered
Straight answers to the questions skeptics actually ask.
The edge is in the math, the caveats are on the table. Here's what a sharp bettor wants to know before paying.

EV+ asks whether a price is mispriced *right now* versus fair value. Steam follows how fast the market is *moving*. They often overlap, but they answer different questions.
